A NH Budget Should Put Families First

House Republicans Vote To Pass Medicaid Income Tax And Take Away Food Assistance and Family Planning for Low Income Granite Staters

This week, House Republicans on the Finance Committee voted to pass Kelly Ayotte’s Medicaid income tax and take away programs and services Granite Staters rely on so they can preserve massive tax cuts to the ultra-wealthy and out of state corporations.

Governor Ayotte’s budget forces working families to pay hundreds or even thousands more for Medicaid. Families making $68k will have to pay up to 5% of their income in new premiums. A single parent with two kids making $67k will pay up to $280/month just to keep their health insurance. This is a massive tax hike on working families, disguised as “premiums.” While the rich and powerful get tax breaks, the working families pay more.

House Republicans voted to take away the Women, Infant, and Children’s Nutrition Program, a food assistance program that helps pregnant and nursing mothers purchase nutritious food around the state. Without funding for this program, mothers and children will lose critical benefits that allow them to purchase healthy food, and local farmers will suffer from a loss of income.

Republicans on the committee also voted to eliminate the New Hampshire Family Planning Program, taking away essential health care services to lower-income Granite Staters like no-cost and low-cost birth control, cancer screenings, STD testing and treatment, pregnancy testing, counseling, and more.

New Hampshire families deserve a budget that puts their needs first—not one that forces working parents, children, and vulnerable communities to pay more while the ultra-wealthy get tax breaks.
