The NH DOT responding to requests from residents along 33 for greater safety in turning into and onto 33 from side streets.

State Senator Tom Sherman, Greenland/Newington State Representative Dennis Malloy, Greenland and Stratham Selectboards, NH DOT District Engineers and Commissioners have created a no passing zone on hi-way 33 that runs between Winnicut Road in Greenland to Sandy Point road in Stratham. Turning onto and off of 33 along this route has proven dangerous with multiple accidents over the years and several fatalities. The outcry of local residents, town and state officials prompted this long over-due change which should make travel along this road a safer for residents who live off of 33 as well as bikers and runners. Speed limits have not yet been changed.

In August 2020 officials in Greenland and Stratham met with DOT and Rockingham Regional Planning officials outlining their concern about the hazards along 33 and proposed short, near and long-term solutions. The first short term step was to make this a no passing zone, eventually the DOT will create a center turn lane for the many local roads that enter onto 33. The state and town elected officials sent a note appreciation to NH Department of Transportation Commission Victoria Sheehan for the DOT’s timely, initial reaction to the request. A copy of the letters are below. We look forward to implementing further steps to fix the problem. The final step will be to implement center turn lane along this route.
